Specifying a profile picture for your user account is a great way of customizing your account in Ubuntu. You can then identify your account through your unique profile picture on the login screen as well as everywhere else.

Giving your user account a profile picture is very simple in Ubuntu. In this article, we will explain how to change your user picture on an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS system.

First, you need to access a user’s account settings; there are two ways to do so.

Method 1: Click the downward arrow located at the top-right corner of your Ubuntu screen. Then click your username and then the Account Settings option.

This will open your Users tab in the Details section of the Ubuntu Settings utility as follows:

Method 2: Another way of accessing the user settings is through the Ubuntu Dash. Enter a relevant keyword such as ‘users’ in the Dash and then click the ‘Users’ search result.

This will also open your Users tab in the Details section of the Ubuntu Settings utility.

Once there, click on the picture icon adjacent to your user name. This will let you set a profile picture in three ways:

The first option is to select a picture from the available list of pictures as shown above.

The second option is to take a picture by clicking the Take a Picture button and using your system camera to take a picture and use it as a profile picture.

The third option is to click the Select File button. This will let you browse through your system and select a file already residing on your system. You can also download a file and save it in the Pictures folder and then select it through this option.

When you select a file, the following dialog will appear, letting you crop the photo according to what suits you more.

Click the Select button after cropping your photo. Your cropped photo will be set as your user account’s profile picture as follows:

You will then be able to see it in the login window and wherever there is an option for displaying profile picture along with your account information on your Linux desktop.
